JOB TITLE: MRI Technologist
 
GENERAL SUMMARY OF DUTIES:  This position is responsible for performing a variety of Magnetic Resonance procedures, ensuring patient safety, and producing excellent quality imaging studies for physicians to assist in the diagnosis and treatment of patients.  Requires independent judgment and understanding of cardiac and vascular anatomy. 
 
SUPERVISION RECEIVED:  Reports to Imaging Services Manager
 
SUPERVISION EXERCISED:  None
 
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
 
  • Perform complex tasks associated with the operation of high field strength magnets and related equipment
  • Position patients for MR scan using immobilization and protective equipment and proper coil placement
  • Screen patients for MR safety before procedure performance
  • Assist cardiologist with procedure performance
  • Start IV catheters, administer contrast media as directed and per protocol
  • Evaluate MR scans for technical quality, collate processed images, and sequence of exposure and label appropriately.
  • Assist with clerical functions (scheduling, MR procedure charges, and supplies)
  • Load and operate power injectors for contrast media administration
  • Maintain accurate patient records
  • Provide orientation for new technologists
  • Provide for the psychological and physical needs of patients for MR procedures
  • Understand and use the PACS system
  • Perform basic image processing (image preparation, measurements) on the workstation
  • Assist in the QA process for the MRI scanner (weekly or bi-weekly phantom sequences to ensure image quality and scanner performance)
  • Maintain equipment, exam rooms, and work areas in a neat and safe condition
  • Completes ancillary tasks to ensure efficient and consistent operations
  • Ensure policy and protocol documents are current
  • Assist with the education and training of new physicians
  • Assist with R&D with MR equipment manufacturer to develop new MR software and new technologies
  • Perform other related duties incidental to the work therein


Requirements

EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:
 
  • Graduate of an accredited School of Radiological Technology 
  • ARRT certification in Radiography
  • ARRT certification in MR technology
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certified
 
EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
 
  • 3 years of MRI experience preferred
  • 12 months of experience in cardiac and vascular imaging preferred
 
ABILITIES: 
 
  • Ability to communicate effectively, verbally, and in writing.
  • Ability to explain procedures clearly and simply to patients.
  • Positive attitude and excellent patient skills

ENVIRONMENTAL/WORKING CONDITIONS:  Medical office, exam, and treatment rooms.  Exposure to a magnetic field.  Exposure to contrast materials and communicable diseases.
 
PHYSICAL/MENTAL DEMANDS:    Variety of standing, sitting, walking.  Must be able to lift 50 pounds of equipment, transfer patients, and hold patients in specific positions during procedures—occasional stress from dealing with tense patients.
