- Thoracic Transplantation and Mechanical Circulatory Support Fellowship
Description
The Department of Cardiac Surgery at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center is seeking candidates for a one- year non-ACGME clinical fellowship in Thoracic Transplantation and Mechanical Circulatory Support. The Cedars-Sinai Heart Institute treats over 400 heart failure patients and evaluates approximately 250 patients with end-stage heart disease for heart transplantation annually. Our Adult Heart Transplant program has performed more transplants over the past 5 years than any other center in the United States. In 2023 we performed 132 adult heart transplants. The Mechanical Circulatory Support service implants over 100 Mechanical Circulatory Assist Devices per year including durable and temporary devices, ECMO, and total artificial hearts.

The Lung Transplant Program has experienced exponential growth in 2023 with 82 lung transplants performed including minimally invasive, robotic, and COVID ARDS lung transplantation. Additionally, the service is actively involved in the management of respiratory failure including VV ECMO as well as ECMO bridge to transplantation.

The clinical fellow will be responsible for the preoperative evaluation, implantation, and postoperative care of patients with end-stage heart and lung disease. Furthermore, the fellow will participate in the procurement of the organs, including the use of the organ care system (the ‘heart in a box’). The service is active with the clinical fellow taking the lead role in ECMO cannulation as well as thoracic organ implantation. Funding will be available for participation in the annual ISHLT meeting and presentation of
clinical research.

Qualifications:
- MD or MD/PhD
- Eligibility for Cedars-Sinai Medical Center Medical Staff Membership
- Eligibility for an unrestricted California Medical License (completed 36 months of ACGME accredited training prior to
being eligible) - Eligibility and/or Certification by the American Board of Thoracic Surgery
