Unit Summary
The Prosthetics and Orthotics Program at Hamilton Health Sciences operates in a state of the art clinic, which is one of the largest P&O departments of its kind in Canada. The department offers service to pediatric and adult patients in acute, rehabilitation and ambulatory settings. Our staff is comprised of a mix of certified clinical, registered technical and administrative staff that help support patients through their journey of receiving prosthetic or orthotic treatment.
Our staff work collaboratively with patients and in some cases interdisciplinary teams to provide custom prosthetic and orthotic solutions. Using the latest digital and traditional techniques, our team designs specific solutions to support patients in achieving their functional, recreational and/or aesthetic goals.
Position Summary
Orthotic services are delivered in an ambulatory setting at the Ron Joyce, Region Rehabilitation building and Brantford General sites. As part of supporting discharge plans, P&O certified clinical staff are also required to provide services for inpatients at various HHS sites and other community hospitals. The P&O certified clinician role encompasses the following scope and daily duties:
- Patient evaluation and treatment planning related to orthotic devices
- Communicate and collaborate with inter-professional health care team
- Design and direct the manufacture of orthotic devices
- Orthotic treatment Implementation, evaluation and ongoing re-evaluation
- Operate specialized stationary and hand tool equipment required to fabricate and adjust prosthetic and orthotic devices
- Document patient specific information in the patient’s electronic medical record
- Instruct students/other health care professionals

Requirements
Qualifications
- Graduate of an Orthotics Prosthetics Canada accredited educational program.
- Current and maintained certified orthotist status with Orthotics Prosthetics Canada.
- Knowledge of Assistive Devices Program of Ontario Orthotics Manual and Fee Schedule.
- Demonstrated knowledge and experience in the management of patients including those with Stroke, Spinal Cord Injury, Acquired Brain Injury and other diagnosis including those with acquired and congenital with complex mobility issues.
- Demonstrated knowledge and experience in the ability to apply well-developed critical thinking and reasoning skills in the delivery of assessment and management techniques for evaluating and addressing the needs individuals requiring prosthetic and/or orthotic treatment
- Self-directed, flexible, resident who is also able to collaborate effectively within an interdisciplinary healthcare team.
- Demonstrated ability to communicate and collaborate effectively with a wide variety of stakeholder groups including patients, families, support staff/caregivers, physicians and other members within the circle of care.
- Demonstrated time management and prioritization skills with the ability to make adjustments to meet urgent deadlines.
- Demonstrated skills in accessing and maintain electronic health records related to the care provided.
- Demonstrated ability to perform repetitive bending, reaching, pushing, lifting and assessment/evaluation techniques using appropriate body mechanics.
- Demonstrated knowledge of patient and workplace safety procedures/protocols with the ability to apply this knowledge in multiple settings.
- Demonstrated interest and commitment to supporting resident and student education.
- Demonstrated commitment to being involved or leading initiatives that improve the profession, patient care, education, workplace health & safety and research.
- A valid Ontario driver’s license and access to a reliable, insured vehicle with 2 million dollars liability insurance for traveling to HHS sites and other community hospitals.
Proficiency in both Official Languages would be an asset.
